Writing Prompt - October 2026
Northeast Ohio has spoiled me with Autumnal atmosphere. Warm days beneath colorful leaves, chilly evenings perfect for fires and flannel, apple cake, pumpkin pie, and the sweet smell of decay. I love the winding-down and settling-in feelings that come when everyone returns from vacations and schools start up again. 'Real life' is re-establishing itself in comfortable, mundane ways...And that is when unexpected twists are most unnerving.
Being able to subvert expectations is a useful storytelling tool no matter your genre, and setting the scene is always key. There are important differences between holding tension to keep your audience in suspense versus making them feel assaulted, and both are viable paths depending on your goals. When you're crafting your story, remember that small, specific details can grow unease into terror, and that the most familiar observations can be the most frightening.
Happy writing, and happy Halloween!
