Don't discount this post just because it's April 1st! While we encourage literary mischief all year long and recognize that extra mischief is inevitable on April Fools' Day, there's something especially important we'd like to celebrate with you this month. Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R.) is a national celebration of reading highlighted in April and specifically on author Beverly Cleary's birthday, April 12th.
Reading is crucial for cognitive, emotional, and educational growth. It is fundamental to language development, building and expanding vocabulary, and understanding diverse and complex concepts. Exposure to different cultures / experiences / emotions via reading fosters empathy, emotional intelligence, and communication skills. Overall, reading stimulates brain function, including enhancing focus, sharpening critical thinking, boosting creativity, and improving memory. Relaxing with a book can even lower blood pressure and reduce stress!
In short, reading is good for us, in a myriad of ways. Take time this month to appreciate how much reading affects us and enriches our lives. National Poetry Month is also celebrated during April! Think about how the stories & poems you love have inspired you, and share that joy! Keep reading, everyone.
