Have you ever asked someone you admire for advice regarding their craft, or about their method, and been disappointed? I haven't found the warning "don't meet your idols" to be true in every experience, but it was certainly accurate when I first encountered an author whose work I adored. The interaction itself went poorly overall and I was left feeling defeated about my passion. Two decades later, I can recognize they were struggling with life upheavals; but at the time, teen-aged me was devastated. Moreso because, in an effort to improve my writing, I attempted to emulate their process and found it draining.
I felt like a failure. I thought I could never be an author because I couldn't conform to a standard method of writing.
Now for the obvious: There is no standard method of writing. Writing is an art form. Where and when and how you write, your methods and the voice you use, are all unique. What works for you may not work for another artist, and vice versa. That's okay! Approaching something differently does not make you or your work any less worthwhile. Being diverse and distinct is what makes art! It is an expression and extension of you.
Don't measure yourself against the perceived successes of others; set your own metrics and celebrate your creative achievements.
