Coinciding with the birthday of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle / International Sherlock Holmes Day (May 22), May is recognized as Mystery Month! The deductive reasoning and observational skills of Sir Doyle's world-renowned consulting detective have become staples of modern crime fiction. Libraries and bookstores often feature curated displays of thrillers during this month, and may have extra activities or events for readers. If you're looking for additional recommendations, the Mystery Writers of America announced their 2026 Edgar Award Winners earlier this week; you can review their nominees in a variety of categories & compile your next reading list.
Don't forget that Free Comic Book Day #FCBD occurs on the 1st Saturday in May! This year, that's tomorrow! The independent comic shops in my area do a fantastic job of hosting events, from midnight trivia to artist signings to all-ages costume parties. I encourage everyone to support their local shops & participate in this yearly celebration of storytelling and community.
