Finishing a story is one of the most difficult things for me, even when I have an ending prepared. Sometimes I get bogged down with too many ideas on my way to the end, deviating from my outline to follow threads of sideplots and characters that have spent too much time in my head. Other times I lose myself in research / details that ultimately have little effect on the story. And I always look back on the writing and think I could have made it stronger.
In truth, there are few things I read where I don't think something could be improved; whether that's perfectionism or imposter syndrome, I've yet to conclude. I'm my hardest critic.
It's helpful to have friends / mentors / colleagues who will encourage while providing constructive feedback (facing challenges is how we grow & better our craft, and we all need a bit of affirmation at times), but it's equally important not to measure self-worth in the opinions of others.
Believe in yourself. Give yourself a pep talk when you need it. Be confident in your abilities and don't let anyone discourage you from your art...Even yourself.
